Mac Pro With M2 Extreme Chipset Expected In 2023

It was initially rumored that Apple could launch a new Mac Pro this year where it would feature the use of the company’s Apple Silicon. However, last we heard, it has been pushed back to 2023, and now according to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, more details about the computer have emerged.

According to Gurman, it seems that Apple’s Mac Pro refresh could end up using an M2 Extreme chipset, or at least that’s what Gurman thinks it will be called. As noted by Gurman, Apple did mention at their Peek Performance event last week that the M1 Ultra will be the company’s last chipset in the M1 series.

This means that it is currently the most powerful chipset in the M1 family, which suggests that either Apple will use multiple M1 Ultras in the Mac Pro, or as Gurman claims, the M2 Extreme. Gurman also states in his report that this might be one of the reasons why Apple delayed the launch of the Mac Pro to 2023 instead of launching it this year.

He writes, “Holding off on launching a new Mac Pro until the M2 line is ready would make sense. That’s because low-power M2 Macs are likely to hit before the first Mac Pro. It wouldn’t be a great marketing exercise for the M1-based Mac Pro to drop after M2 machines, but stranger things have happened.”

Many have wondered how Apple will approach the Mac Pro refresh. This is because currently, the Mac Pro is Apple’s most modular computer, so it will be interesting to see how Apple might approach this concept with SoCs like the Apple Silicon.
